College of All Magic Destroyed

THE CENTER OF MAGICAL LEARNING IN ORANIA HAS FALLEN!  - JUNE 2012

Battle for the College

Brave adventurers struggle to protect the College of All Magic against a fierce Shadow Dragon attack, to no avail.
College of All Magic Falls
For over a month, black obelisks have surrounded the Risen Lands Bazaar.  No one knew how they appeared or what they did, though one adventurer warned that touching the obelisks led to instant teleportation to one of the Shadow realms.  In hindsight, these obelisks clearly posed a danger to the Risen Lands, but no one fully realized exactly how deadly they could be.  This past bazaar, a horde of Shadow Dragons descended on the College of All Magic in response to a summons sent through the obelisks.  As adventurers watched helplessly, they decimated the college, tearing down buildings and massacring any who got in their way.  Broken ruins are all that are left of the College.  After a massive battle, the initial band of Shadow Dragons was defeated, and the healers from the College managed to erect a barrier to ward off the second wave of attackers, but the protection is only temporary.  The sheer power of the unexpected attack stunned everyone watching.  Orania faces a threat greater than we have ever seen.  These creatures, though they bear a superficial resemblance to the dragons we know, are not dragons, but some amalgamation of shadow and monster.  If you have information regarding these creatures, please inform us!
Mages Bicker After Disaster
A disturbing schism has appeared in the ranks of Orania’s most powerful mages.  After the destruction of the College of All Magic, factions among the mages began arguing in the ruins.  Their shouting matches, combined with erratic bursts of mage-energy as they lost control of their powers, scared many who watched the situation dissolve into chaos.  Some wanted to rebuild the College before doing anything else, others argued that destroying the Shadow Dragon menace was the most important, and yet another group sought to reorganize the way the College was run.  None of the mages seemed very effective at helping deal with the disaster, though hopefully they will begin working together soon.  But for some, this incident is the last straw.  Thieren Bloodaxe echoed the sentiments of many watchers when he said, “Those high and mighty mages in their ivory towers are useless parasites.  Time to get rid of them and start again.”  There are even rumors going around that a few powerful adventurers chose to loot the ruins instead of fighting the Shadow Dragons, claiming that they would rebuild the College better than before.
Empress Meng Returns
Another danger has returned to this land: Empress Meng leads the Krav Mercenaries again.  Eyewitnesses report that a ceremony requiring the death of an innocent maiden brought Meng back to life.  But, due to the efforts of a band of heroic adventurers, something went wrong.  Though Meng barely escaped, she looked exhausted and weakened.  Whether she regains her full powers remains to be seen.  The intended sacrifice, named Liliana according to our sources, was rescued and reunited with her prospective husband.  Rumor has it that this also prevented war from breaking out, though no one is willing to confirm these rumors.
War in the Penumbra
Lord Degamesian, the Sable Elf who five years ago released the oblivion storm on the world, has returned to life with the help of the Heart of Irony, a powerful resurrection stone that can only be used by necromancers.  He has begun a bid to take over the Penumbra and regain his former power.  Moonshadow, the leader of the Temple of Dark Waters and Degamesian’s daughter, opposes him, and has many powerful allies of her own.  The conflict threatens to tear apart the Penumbra, for neither side has an advantage.
Adamantium Guard Unmasked
For five years, people have suspected that a good part of the Adamantium Guard is secretly loyal to Lin Chu Hao.  Some defected openly, but many others may remain hidden in the ranks.  But a group of brave questers revealed last week that more dangerous creatures have infiltrated the guard at the highest level.  They unmasked the leader of the guard as a shadowy creature who they destroyed.  It is unknown if this creature was a Shadow Dragon, an ally of the Shadow Dragons, or an entirely new menace.  The former Captain of the Guard Andre was restored to power once the monster was defeated.  He promises to hunt down the corruption in the ranks of the guard and restore it to its former glory.
Curse on Mines Dispelled
For months, people who entered the Mines of Shaviek have been disappearing, leaving only a silver coin behind.  When adventurers investigated this strange phenomenon, they discovered that the curse was caused by garnets embedded in the walls of the mines.  These garnets were actually shadowy Glomglitzen, who were transforming people into coins in an attempt to spread chaos and Shadow.  They drew their energy from a dormant Shadow Dragon that resided beneath the mines and was slowly waking up.  Once the adventurers found this out, they searched out the Shadow Dragon and destroyed it before it could wake up fully and spread more death and destruction.
